2026 Conference Theme Park Visit Day

On the second day of the conference, we are encouraging delegates to visit one of the themed attractions near Royal Holloway, and test out the cartographic methods we will discuss on the first day of the conference.

On the final day of the conference, we will have time to share our findings – both specific and methodological, as part of the conference schedule.

We have elected to leave the choice of park up to delegates’ own preferences, and so we can draw insight from a range of experiences. To assist with transportation and co-ordination, a sign-up sheet is available here. We would encourage delegates to co-ordinate transportation to reduce costs.

The nearest major attractions are:

Legoland Windsor

Legoland Windsor is about 15 minutes away by car/taxi. You can also get there by two busses from Royal Holloway – bus 8 to Windsor, and then bus 703. This is a family park, in contrast to Thorpe Park which is more of a ‘thrill ride’ park.

Thorpe Park

Thorpe Park is also about 15 minutes away by car/taxi. Bus 441 to Staines and then 446 will get you there in about 40 minutes. There’s also a bus from Staines train station. Thorpe Park is a thrill park.

Chessington World of Adventures

Chessington World of Adventures is about 30 mins away by car. You can get there by public transport (it’s walkable from Chessington South station), but it takes about two hours. It’s faster if you’re staying in London.

There are other options to explore, like those in Central London, such as the London Dungeon, or you might explore sites like Windsor Castle, or Brooklands Museum but we don’t know how much sonic interest you’ll find there!
